  • Why the Right Hand Hygiene Solution Matters More Than Ever

Hand hygiene plays a vital role in protecting public health, maintaining workplace safety, and reducing the spread of harmful bacteria and viruses. As we recognise World Hand Hygiene Day, it’s an important reminder that effective products are essential. The World Health Organisation continues to highlight the importance of hand hygiene as one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of infection and this years theme is action saves lives. When should you use hand wash vs hand sanitiser? It’s important to understand that hand sanitiser is not a replacement for effective hand washing - it is a complementary solution, often used on the go and in fast-paced environments. Take a look below to find the right product for every scenario: Hand Sanitiser When hand washing isn't immediately available Between hand washing In vehicles or on the go After touching commonly shared surfaces e.g door handles Hand Wash After using the toilet Before & after handling food After handling waste or chemicals When hands are visibly dirty or greasy In high-risk, hygiene critical environments To put it simply, you shouldn't use hand sanitiser instead of hand wash instead as a quick hygiene boost between proper hand washes, especially in busy or mobile environments. Understanding the correct hand wash. Antibacterial hand wash plays an important role in maintaining hygiene in higher-risk environments but it isn’t always required for every setting. Understanding when to use it helps ensure the right level of protection without overcomplicating everyday routines. Antibac Hand Wash High-risk and hygiene critical environments e.g food prep, healthcare, cleaning Handling raw food Contact with high-touch / contaminated surfaces High traffic environments Standard Hand Wash Maintaining day-to-day hygiene Lower-risk settings For frequent use (often gentler on skin) The right hand care solution makes all the difference. • Celebrating World Earth Day

This World Earth Day, we wanted to focus on why the Earth is so important. Across every part of Cleenol, the environment is always a top priority, from the products we manufacture to the way we source our daily power. Every decision plays a role in helping to protect our planet. We’ve made several important changes over the years, and we want to highlight what they are and why they matter, in the hope of encouraging other businesses to follow suit. Solar Panels In 2025, we made the important switch to renewable energy by installing solar panels, meaning all of the products we manufacture are now produced using 100% renewable electricity. Solar energy plays a vital role in reducing reliance on fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas which are finite resources that contribute significantly to climate change. By harnessing clean energy from the sun, we are able to substantially reduce our carbon emissions and help lower the UK’s overall environmental impact. Zero Landfill We are proud to operate a zero-waste-to-landfill policy. All of our waste is carefully segregated to ensure it is reused, recycled, or converted into energy wherever possible. By managing waste responsibly, we are helping to reduce pollution, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and protect natural resources for future generations. Concentrated Chemicals We were one of the first cleaning manufacturers to introduce concentrated chemical solutions, delivering significant environmental benefits. By reducing the amount of water and packaging required, our concentrates help cut plastic use, reduce carbon emissions from transport, and minimise packaging waste and shipping impact. This more efficient approach supports both sustainability and operational efficiency for our customers. We hope our efforts inspire other like-minded businesses to put the Earth first and carefully consider their environmental impact across every aspect of their operations.

  • The world's largest cleaning & hygiene exhibition.

We recently returned to Interclean Amsterdam , the largest exhibition in the world for cleaning and hygiene professionals, where we were proud to showcase our innovative product range to a truly global audience. Our stand was bustling throughout the event, and we had a fantastic opportunity to engage with visitors from across the industry. One of the highlights was giving away exclusive sample sizes of our upcoming EU Ecolabel product range, available only to attendees at the show. These proved extremely popular and gave visitors a first-hand look at what’s coming soon from us. Alongside this, our Cleenol duck giveaways were a real hit and quickly flew off the stand, adding a bit of fun and personality to the event while helping us stand out in a busy exhibition hall. We also showcased our Evolution Super Concentrate range, with the key message running throughout the stand: “The future of cleaning is concentrated.”  This message reflects the core benefits of concentrates - not only do they offer significant cost savings due to their low cost-in-use dilution rates, but they also play an important role in reducing environmental impact. To bring this message to life, our stand design featured a striking visual installation showing a net filled with the equivalent number of empty plastic bottles that would be generated and potentially end up as waste in our oceans if concentrated products were not used. It was a powerful reminder of the environmental benefits that switching to concentrates can deliver, particularly in reducing single-use plastic waste. Most importantly, we had the chance to connect with a wide range of cleaning and hygiene professionals. We met new contacts, strengthened relationships with existing customers, and had many valuable conversations about the challenges and opportunities within the industry. Events like Interclean are always a great reminder of just how innovative and fast-moving our sector is. Overall, it was a hugely successful show for us, and we’re excited to follow up on the conversations started and continue building momentum around our upcoming product launches. Did you meet us at Interclean? If you want to find out how we can help you, get in touch with our team sales@cleenol.co.uk and they will be sure to assist your cleaning and hygiene needs!

  • The Sun Fund Launch

It’s not every day you attend a launch event set against the stunning backdrop of a historic castle but that’s exactly what made the unveiling of The Sun Fund at Broughton Castle such a memorable occasion.   The event brought together a remarkable mix of attendees, including the Lord Lieutenant of Oxfordshire, representatives from across the political spectrum, and influential figures from the local business community. Their presence underscored the importance and urgency of collaborative action to support young people in the region. Guests were welcomed with the unique opportunity to take on multi Paralympic bronze medallist Aaron McKibbin in a friendly challenge before the event formally began. Guests heard from Cleenol’s CEO Sam Greaves, as well as a young speaker from Distraction Youth who shared a powerful and personal perspective on growing up in Banbury. We were honoured to have the Lord-Lieutenant of Oxfordshire, Mrs Marjorie Glasgow, formally launch the fund, followed by Emmy O’Shaughnessy from Oxfordshire Youth, who spoke about the inspiration behind the initiative.   The Sun Fund aims to create clearer, more accessible pathways into skills development, employment, and long-term opportunity for the next generation in Banbury.   The initiative will focus on: ·        Mentoring and work experience opportunities ·        Skills development and employability support ·        Investment in youth services and facilities ·        Creating sustainable, long-term pathways into employment   There was a strong sense throughout the event that this initiative is both timely and necessary. The level of enthusiasm and commitment from those involved reflects a shared ambition to drive real, positive change for Banbury’s young people.   We received pledges from local businesses regarding the actions they are going to take for Banbury’s young people. Including:   “Prodrive is committing to open our doors to help young people in Banbury access careers in motorsports.”   “As DCS Group our commitment is to offer apprenticeships to young people, offer work experiences and placements and continued support for The Sun Fund.”   The Sun Fund is closely aligned with the successful Business Guardians model developed by Oxfordshire Youth. This proven framework brings a structured, collaborative approach to how businesses can engage with and support young people in meaningful, lasting ways.   We’re incredibly excited to see how The Sun Fund develops in the months ahead. A big thank you to everyone who came and also to everyone who brought this vision to life. Martin Fiennes for the use of Broughton Castle, Lord-Lieutenant of Oxfordshire, Mrs Marjorie Glasgow for launching the Sun Fund and thank you to our ambassadors Frederick Fennessy, Pippa Bennett-Warner and to our founding trustees Tom Horne, Matthew Rolph and Sir Tony Baldry.

  • A Day in the Life of a Regulatory Chemist

Ever wondered what would have happened if you would have continued your chemistry education beyond the school laboratory and the Mentos/Coca-Cola experiment? Or go to law school in the likes of Tony Blair and Kim Kardashian? Well, you can thank your lucky stars as our own Sarah Davy has done both – and agreed to unveil what it's like working as a  Regulatory Chemist at Cleenol. Q: Hi Sarah! Can you tell me about the core responsibilities and objectives of your current role? Sarah Davy: Within regulatory chemistry I do lots of different jobs such as create and maintain product Safety Data Sheets (SDS), help notify products to the relevant regulatory bodies as well as amend and approve new product labels. Q: What would you do during a typical day? SD: A typical day involves carrying out lots of regulatory compliance work. This can include updating various product documentation and researching any new chemical regulations which affect the cleaning and hygiene product industry. For example, with the finalisation of Brexit at the beginning of this year, there are lots of new rules to keep up with. My team develops new formulations in the Cleenol laboratory, performing tests to measure quality and performance before the findings are reported to the rest of the company. Once suitable products are found the process is scaled up to production next door. A typical day may also include liaising with customers in order to determine what they require from a product, and also with suppliers to determine what ingredients they can offer which may be suitable for a given project. Q: How did you get into this industry? SD: Following university and a postgraduate course in IP law, I started out as a production/developmental chemist. During this I picked up some of the regulatory aspects such as creating SDS, which led to my job here at Cleenol. Q: What was your first impression of Cleenol? SD: I've been at Cleenol for 7 months now. It was an interesting start going immediately into a lockdown after my first day, but, it has been interesting to see the company grow as the lockdown restrictions have slowly lifted. Q: What do you enjoy most about your job? SD: I enjoy the challenges the job provides as most projects require a problem-solving approach. I also enjoy working with a wide variety of people, from my colleagues in the lab and those working in production through to working with customers and suppliers. I like that at Cleenol we are always looking for that next opportunity, whether it be simply gaining new customers or creating bespoke products for particular customers. Q: Do you have any interests outside of work that you would like to share with our readers? SD: I enjoy photography, whether it be taking photos of landscapes or going to track days and getting action shots of bike racing. Occasionally I will use these to sketch from, in either pencil or ink.

  • Help your customers in the fight against coronavirus

There are now more than 20,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus in China, and over 150 in 23 other countries – as of 4 February 2020.   Matt Hancock, the British Health Secretary, has stated that the number of new cases is doubling every five days, and will be an ongoing concern for months. In the UK there are currently two confirmed cases of coronavirus, both Chinese nationals who are being treated in Newcastle, and 94 repatriated British nationals are in quarantine in the Wirral, to see if they develop symptoms.    There are currently no vaccines or a cure for coronavirus, and antibiotics will not work. Recovery depends on initial health – how strong the sufferer’s immune system is to begin with. With 425 deaths so far – and rising – the concern about protection from coronavirus is something that all businesses need to be aware of. High demand for cleaning products Our products are currently selling fast – everything that can be used to protect workplaces, staff and customers from coronavirus is flying off the shelves. From gloves and face masks, to environmental decontamination products and biocidal sanitisers, we have seen a rise in sales, and we are aware that the situation is very fluid.   Our products can help to protect against many viruses, but there are more ways that you can help your customers deal with any outbreak. Measures to stay safe Although testing on this particular virus is still being completed, we know that similar viruses are spread through coughing and sneezing, so it is appropriate to use similar protection measures when dealing with coronavirus.   Hand washing Effective hand washing is the best first line of defence against coronavirus. Follow a proper, thorough hand washing routine. Avoid touching surfaces that could have been affected Although it is not possible to determine how long the coronavirus survives on surfaces (anything from hours to months), it is good practice to use a biocidal cleaner like our Broad Spectrum Sanitizer, which is non-fragranced and food-safe.    Stay at least six feet away from an infected person who coughs or sneezes This is standard hospital guidelines for the prevention of flu spreading – and as this virus seems to be similar in behaviour, it is a good idea to treat it the same. If you want added protection from breathing in droplets, then face masks are a good option.    Millions of masks and counting China is running out of face masks, suits and goggles; they can produce, at full capacity, 20 million masks a day. But with the current situation where several provinces in China have made it compulsory to wear masks in public, a combined population of 300 million are in need. Panic buying and the phased return of workers after the Lunar New Year has meant that they are only working at 60-70% capacity. There are currently no recommendations about compulsory mask wearing outside of China. Yet as new cases are reported every day and the recommendations by the World Health Organisation change, keeping abreast of the developments will ensure you don’t run out of protective products.   Make sure your customers have access to face masks, goggles and latex gloves, as well as efficient, lab-tested cleaning supplies, by getting your Cleenol products in stock quickly.    Find out more Call: 01295 251721 Email: sales@cleenol.co.uk
