  • THE CLEENOL SUMMER PARTY

On Saturday 9th September, Cleenol turned up the heat, quite literally with our annual summer party. With the sun blazing, a yummy feast to enjoy and a few soggy t-shirts (thanks to the water guns!), the team came together to have a fantastic afternoon. It was great fun getting to know each other out of the office and on a more personal level. We had some fabulous live music kindly brought to us by our maintenance manager, Phil Aris’s son, Sam, which provided the perfect atmosphere for our summer festivities. The children enjoyed getting up to mischief and tiring themselves out on the bouncy castles. We also managed to raise some money towards our Project 75 mission with a good old-fashioned bake sale to soak up the drinks, kindly supplied by members of the Cleenol family. There was a huge variety of goodies which all went down a treat! Due to the success of the summer party, we are eager to see what our next party entails! Stay tuned for more exciting updates from Cleenol.

  • Should hygiene and cleaning products have CE and UKCA markings?

The letters ‘CE’ appear on many products traded on the extended Single Market in the European Economic Area (EEA). They signify that products sold in the EEA have been assessed to meet high safety, health, and environmental protection requirements. When you buy a new phone, a teddy bear, or a TV within the EEA, you can find the CE mark on them. CE marking also supports fair competition by holding all companies accountable to the same rules.By affixing the CE marking to a product, a manufacturer declares that the product meets all the legal requirements for CE marking and can be sold throughout the EEA. This also applies to products made in other countries that are sold in the EEA. CE marking is not mandatory for all product categories CE marking is mandatory in the EU, but only for those products which are covered by the scope of one or more of the so called ‘New Approach’ Directives. The full list of these product categories is below: • active implantable medical devices • appliances burning gaseous fuels • cableway installations designed to carry persons • eco-design of energy related products• electromagnetic compatibility • equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres • explosives for civil uses • hot-water boilers • household refrigerators and freezers • in vitro diagnostic medical devices • lifts • low voltage • machinery • measuring instruments • medical devices • noise emission in the environment • non-automatic weighing instruments • personal protective equipment • pressure equipment • pyrotechnics • radio and telecommunications terminal equipment • recreational craft • safety of toys • simple pressure vessels The CE marking is not required for items, for example: • chemicals • pharmaceuticals • cosmetics and foodstuffs The CE mark is not applicable for Cleenol's products Cleenol is recognised as one of the UK’s leading innovators, manufacturers and suppliers of quality cleaning and hygiene products. Our products are not subject to any of the New Approach Directives, and therefore the CE mark is not applicable. A new conformity marking terminology: CE, UKCA and UKNI Markings Introduced following the UK Withdrawal from the European Union, the UKCA (UK Conformity Assessed) marking is a new UK product marking that is used for goods being placed on the market in Great Britain (England, Wales and Scotland). The UKNI applies to products on the Northern Ireland market. They cover most goods which previously required the CE marking, and are therefore also not applicable to Cleenol products.

  • Project 75|75|75 Goes Live

This year sees Cleenol turn 75. A family run independent developer and producer of cleaning and hygiene solutions, Cleenol has always worked to give back to the community in which it operates. So, this year, as a celebration of this ethic, we are launching our 75x75x75 Charity fundraiser. Spread across the full 12 months, Cleenol has challenged itself and its customers and suppliers to raise £75,000 through participation of at least 75 people at 75 events. These events can be large or small, group or personal and will cover a gamut of types of activity. From the 3 Peaks Challenge to a weight loss programme, to 24 gaming endurance challenges and many more to come. 3 charities will form the core of the recipient base. Katharine House Hospice has a long-standing relationship with Cleenol. We have been involved with the charity from its inception and over the last 30 years have continued to provide cleaning supplies and any charity fundraising receipts to the home. This year we also sponsored the development of their EPiC online resource to provide a broad spread of support services to people facing the challenges around end of life. The second charity focuses on another area where Cleenol pays particular focus and is one of the drivers behind the culture and management approach in the company. Oxfordshire Mind is dedicated to making sure that anyone experiencing a mental health issue gets both support and respect. They have been campaigning for better mental health in Oxfordshire for over 50 years through their campaigning and support services. Like all local Minds, they are an independent charity that is proud to be affiliated with the national Mind association. The third charity selected by all the employees in an open vote, is the Thames Valley Air Ambulance. As the providers of emergency support 365 days a year, they work hard to give everyone the best chance of survival after an accident or in an emergency situation. In 2022 they attended over 3,000 incidents. All of this is provided without official government funding, so is solely reliant on charity donations. We have launched a dedicated webpage for people to follow the money raising, to add events and to donate to all the events that are generated. • World Asthma Day

On World Asthma Day (May 2 2023) and throughout May, people with asthma and organisations dedicated to asthma control and education join together to increase awareness about asthma and improve the lives of all people with asthma. It is organised by the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) (www.ginasthma.org), a World Health Organization collaborative organisation founded in 1993. The World Health Organisation estimates that 235 million people suffer from asthma globally, highlighting the importance of this event in raising asthma awareness. Approximately 1.1 million of these people live in the UK, and this event is the perfect chance to raise awareness about asthma, its effects, and potential treatments. VOC exposure has been associated with asthma, amongst other eye, skin and respiratory irritations. However, different effects of VOCs on human health have been reported regarding the type of molecules involved. This is why our edencleen range of products is entirely VOC free.

  • Global Recycling Day

Today March 18th is Global Recycling Day. Recycling has been a watch word for the environment for many years and it does indeed allow for all types of energy saving but alone, it does not offer the silver bullet for waste control. During any recycling process, resources are reused, energy is consumed, and a degree of pollution follows. This is why the often-quoted 3R's of going green - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle – appear in this specific order. This is where pre cycling comes in, under the “Reduce” phase. Precycling is about reducing waste by avoiding items that will generate it, or selecting certain items that will generate less, or acquiring items that can be reused for something else but attention to precycling can also bring significant savings early on in a manufacturing process. Manufacturing cleaning products requires the use of many resources, both renewable and non-renewable. The performance of a cleaning product has a direct correlation with the resources used: if a low performance cleaning product is used, more of it will be needed to deliver the same level of cleanliness as perhaps a more effective or more expensively formulated product will. If a concentrated cleaning product is used, there will be a consequential reduction in environmental impact thanks to there being less plastic and less energy needed during its production, when compared to a traditional product. These are both examples of pre cycling. Pre-cycling is the process of reducing waste by attempting to avoid producing items which will generate waste. It is the concept of "using less" to "generate less''. Such an approach has a stronger positive environmental impact than recycling. Indeed, pre-cycling helps reduce the need for recycling; although recycling is a positive and necessary process, as we saw above, it still requires energy and resource consumption. Developing formulations is not just about mixing ingredients that will provide a functional product, it is mainly about finding the way to generate the best synergistic action between ingredients. For example, the addition of some ingredients may lower the cleaning performance of the formulation. For example, selecting a specific anti bactericidal raw material that is also a surfactant allows the use of just one raw material instead of two. Cleenol has for over 70 years developed effective formulations that require long development cycles and testing of hundreds of prototypes to ensure that we deliver the best cleaning solution at the least cost to the environment. Cleenol has adapted the well documented engineering inspired Taguchi process for its cleaning products.  With this approach, Cleenol has developed extremely effective cleaning formulations that use the lowest possible amount of active ingredient - reducing resource use. This reduction in resource material usage is a highly effective way to reduce our environmental footprint and has been part of our DNA for decades. It forms an integral part of our vision for a cleaner, safer world.
