  • Norovirus: what you need to know

In the fight against viruses, few methods are as simple yet effective as proper hand hygiene and surface disinfection. This is particularly true in the case of norovirus, a highly contagious virus that causes gastroenteritis, leading to symptoms like stomach pain, nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting. In this article, we'll explore the significance of hand washing and surface disinfection in preventing the spread of norovirus, and introduce a groundbreaking product that offers additional protection.   What is norovirus? Noroviruses are a group of viruses that can cause gastroenteritis, an inflammation of the stomach and intestines. This infection is often mistakenly referred to as the “stomach flu”, however, norovirus is not related to the flu, which is caused by the influenza virus.   Norovirus can affect anyone and is known for its rapid transmission, especially in crowded, high-traffic environments. It's resilient and can survive on surfaces for days, making contamination a constant risk. The symptoms are unpleasant and can lead to severe dehydration, especially in vulnerable populations like the elderly and young children.   Hand Washing: Your First Line of Defence Regular hand washing with soap and water is one of the best ways to prevent the spread of norovirus. It's especially important after using the toilet and before eating or preparing food. Thorough hand washing for at least 20 seconds is key to remove and eliminate the virus from skin. The Importance of Surface Disinfection In environments such as schools, it’s difficult to ensure correct hand hygiene practices are followed, particularly with younger children, so the risk of spreading norovirus increases. Norovirus can linger on surfaces long after an infected person has touched them and regular cleaning isn't always enough; disinfection is necessary to kill the virus. Using a disinfectant proven to be effective against norovirus on frequently touched surfaces like door handles, push plates, light switches, and food contact surfaces will drastically reduce the risk of contamination.   Our Norovirus-Tested Disinfectant Steritec Virucidal Cleaner is a fragrance-free surface disinfectant tested against, amongst other bacteria and viruses, norovirus. It's designed for use everywhere a high level of disinfection is required, ensuring that surfaces are not just clean, but also free from norovirus contaminants.   Conclusion The combination of diligent hand washing and thorough surface disinfection as part of your hygiene routine will greatly reduce the spread of norovirus, other viruses and bacteria to ensure you create a safer environment for everyone. Remember, prevention is always better than cure, and in the case of norovirus, these simple practices can make a significant difference.

  • WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 2023

Marking World Environment Day on 5th June to protect and celebrate our planet On 5th June it’s the UN’s World Environment Day. What is World Environment Day about? World Environment Day has been held since 1974 and is the largest global environment platform, with over 150 countries participating. Its purpose is to engage individuals and organisations around the world to raise awareness of environmental issues and to celebrate actions taken to protect the environment. This year, to mark the 50 year anniversary since the first conference was held, the event will once again be hosted by Sweden. • THERE’S A CHANGE COMING TO THE CLEANING AND HYGIENE INDUSTRY

Biocides are products used to protect people and animals, preserve goods, stop pests, and control viruses, bacteria and fungi through chemical or biological actions. They are regulated by the UK and EU governments under the ‘Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR)’. The BPR has taken 30 years to impact the cleaning/hygiene products industry but it’s going to hit in the next 12 to 24 months. Enormous regulatory change is on the way for disinfectants, specifically those containing Benzalkonium Chloride (BKC) and Didecyldimethylammonium Chloride (DDAC), which will lead to a significant shake up in the industry. Under the BPR, government authorisation will be required for disinfectant and sanitising products placed on the UK and/or EU markets. Therefore, in simple terms if the product is not authorised then the product cannot be sold. The new updates to the EU BPR, regarding BKC and DDAC will mean that many products will disappear from the market, claims on products will become far more restricted and the cheaper, more dubious suppliers of low-grade disinfectants will disappear. However, what it does mean is that the products that survive will be guaranteed to do exactly what they say on the tin. What are Cleenol doing to help? Cleenol has been working on a range of new hard surface disinfection products, which we will be launching soon. These products will be supported through the EU BPR as well as the GB BPR when it comes into effect, to ensure continuity in our products for the future. Some of these products include two new additions to our super concentrates range - Evolution, along with a brand-new range of high-level disinfectants - Steritec.

  • THE CLEENOL SUMMER PARTY

On Saturday 9th September, Cleenol turned up the heat, quite literally with our annual summer party. With the sun blazing, a yummy feast to enjoy and a few soggy t-shirts (thanks to the water guns!), the team came together to have a fantastic afternoon. It was great fun getting to know each other out of the office and on a more personal level. We had some fabulous live music kindly brought to us by our maintenance manager, Phil Aris’s son, Sam, which provided the perfect atmosphere for our summer festivities. The children enjoyed getting up to mischief and tiring themselves out on the bouncy castles. We also managed to raise some money towards our Project 75 mission with a good old-fashioned bake sale to soak up the drinks, kindly supplied by members of the Cleenol family. There was a huge variety of goodies which all went down a treat! Due to the success of the summer party, we are eager to see what our next party entails! Stay tuned for more exciting updates from Cleenol.

  • Should hygiene and cleaning products have CE and UKCA markings?

The letters ‘CE’ appear on many products traded on the extended Single Market in the European Economic Area (EEA). They signify that products sold in the EEA have been assessed to meet high safety, health, and environmental protection requirements. When you buy a new phone, a teddy bear, or a TV within the EEA, you can find the CE mark on them. CE marking also supports fair competition by holding all companies accountable to the same rules.By affixing the CE marking to a product, a manufacturer declares that the product meets all the legal requirements for CE marking and can be sold throughout the EEA. This also applies to products made in other countries that are sold in the EEA.   CE marking is not mandatory for all product categories CE marking is mandatory in the EU, but only for those products which are covered by the scope of one or more of the so called ‘New Approach’ Directives. The full list of these product categories is below: • active implantable medical devices • appliances burning gaseous fuels • cableway installations designed to carry persons • eco-design of energy related products• electromagnetic compatibility • equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres • explosives for civil uses • hot-water boilers • household refrigerators and freezers • in vitro diagnostic medical devices • lifts • low voltage • machinery • measuring instruments • medical devices • noise emission in the environment • non-automatic weighing instruments • personal protective equipment • pressure equipment • pyrotechnics • radio and telecommunications terminal equipment • recreational craft • safety of toys • simple pressure vessels The CE marking is not required for items, for example: • chemicals • pharmaceuticals • cosmetics and foodstuffs   The CE mark is not applicable for Cleenol's products Cleenol is recognised as one of the UK’s leading innovators, manufacturers and suppliers of quality cleaning and hygiene products. Our products are not subject to any of the New Approach Directives, and therefore the CE mark is not applicable.   A new conformity marking terminology: CE, UKCA and UKNI Markings Introduced following the UK Withdrawal from the European Union, the UKCA (UK Conformity Assessed) marking is a new UK product marking that is used for goods being placed on the market in Great Britain (England, Wales and Scotland). The UKNI applies to products on the Northern Ireland market. They cover most goods which previously required the CE marking, and are therefore also not applicable to Cleenol products.

  • Project 75|75|75 Goes Live

This year sees Cleenol turn 75. A family run independent developer and producer of cleaning and hygiene solutions, Cleenol has always worked to give back to the community in which it operates. So, this year, as a celebration of this ethic, we are launching our 75x75x75 Charity fundraiser. Spread across the full 12 months, Cleenol has challenged itself and its customers and suppliers to raise £75,000 through participation of at least 75 people at 75 events. These events can be large or small, group or personal and will cover a gamut of types of activity. From the 3 Peaks Challenge to a weight loss programme, to 24 gaming endurance challenges and many more to come. 3 charities will form the core of the recipient base. Katharine House Hospice has a long-standing relationship with Cleenol. We have been involved with the charity from its inception and over the last 30 years have continued to provide cleaning supplies and any charity fundraising receipts to the home. This year we also sponsored the development of their EPiC online resource to provide a broad spread of support services to people facing the challenges around end of life. The second charity focuses on another area where Cleenol pays particular focus and is one of the drivers behind the culture and management approach in the company. Oxfordshire Mind is dedicated to making sure that anyone experiencing a mental health issue gets both support and respect. They have been campaigning for better mental health in Oxfordshire for over 50 years through their campaigning and support services. Like all local Minds, they are an independent charity that is proud to be affiliated with the national Mind association. The third charity selected by all the employees in an open vote, is the Thames Valley Air Ambulance . As the providers of emergency support 365 days a year, they work hard to give everyone the best chance of survival after an accident or in an emergency situation. In 2022 they attended over 3,000 incidents. All of this is provided without official government funding, so is solely reliant on charity donations. We have launched a dedicated webpage for people to follow the money raising, to add events and to donate to all the events that are generated. Make sure to follow the site here https://project75.mycleenol.com/
